On Wednesday 18th January approximately 80 Under 16 and Under 18 footballers gathered at the West Adelaide Football Club to take part in our program “Becoming a Responsible Footballer.” This day was run in conjunction with our Community Partners, Western Futures.
The day started with a historical perspective from Board member and past player, Robert Day. The players were then involved some ice breaking games and a rope activity that was very popular.
The players were then divided into three different groups where they discussed cultural awareness. This was run by past West Adelaide Reserves player Andy White. The discussion allowed players to gain a better understanding of cultural diversity and become more respectful of cultural differences.
The next workshop was hosted by Andrew Worrall who is currently a support staff member here at the Club. Andrew focussed on communication and aspects of face to face communication, body language, words, tone of voice, answering the telephone in a professional manner, understanding the lasting implications of Facebook, the importance of making a positive first impression and gaining an understanding of what professionalism means at the West Adelaide Football Club.
The final workshop was taken by Helen Nowosilskyj, a WAFC Member, who discussed resume writing and focussed on the importance of resumes, reviewing resumes and how to write a cover letter.
We are pleased with how the day went and hope that our players now have a greater understanding of what is required to be a league or AFL footballer in the future.
