CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE PROGRAM
The West Adelaide Football Club has led the way in producing young talent over the past ten years and currently has more players in the AFL system than any other State League Club in Australia.
The West Adelaide Football Club Under 18 and Under 16 Centre of Excellence Program (CoE) aim to set the standard by providing players with access to first class coaching, fitness and medical staff as well as life education sessions and welfare support. This program allows us to develop a larger group of our young players to a higher standard of not only AFL quality, but more importantly into a steady and sustainable stream of SANFL League Footballers.
Players selected in the CoE program are chosen to represent the West Adelaide Football Club by having attributes that we believe can be improved through football performance in the underage program and into senior ranks. The aim is to get the best players into the system to enhance their chances of making it at an elite level.
The CoE program brings West Adelaide’s most talented teens together to play at an elite level in the SANFL Macca’s Cup. Macca’s Cup is a 23-round competition second only to the League competition in SA in terms of prestige.
Whilst winning is important, the real success of this program will be measured in individual and team development throughout the year. Players will continue to have strong practical and technical support through the year and will be exposed to a variety of game situations including playing curtain raiser games to the League team as well as media exposure on both ABC TV, the Advertiser and local radio programs.
The season will run parallel to the League competition, with the Grand Final.
The competition will feature players under 18 years old, but there will be a provision for six overage footballers to participate each week.
The Macca’s shield is an under 16 competition that runs over 6 weeks and includes 9 games between March and culminating with a Grand Final on May 14th. There are some mid week games during this competition during the April School Holidays.
